The Unknown unknowns

I was listening to an audiobook as I drove this morning which, in the portion I was listening to, covering the innate human desire for intellectual growth. The desire and drive to continue to learn and develop as part of the journey to becoming the best possible version of ourselves.
This is a stream of thinking that has come up a couple of times in recent books that I have read or listened to.
The underlying concept being that part of the human experience and part of our purpose for being put on this planet, to take our place in this world and society, is to develop into all that we are capable of becoming.
What came up for me as I listened to this and reflected on the books, audiobooks, and various courses & programs that I have attended is that the more I have explored, the more I have developed. The more that I have explored and developed, the more I become aware of the opportunities and possibilities that exist to learn more.
Within that, I sense that this journey to becoming the best possible version of myself/ourselves is a never ending journey. A journey of ever expanding vistas and enlightenment.
It was then that I remembered the quote by Donald Rumsfeld
“There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know”
I sense most people would relate to this. If it were not by exploring new things, new learning, new experiences we may never become aware of new things that we did not even know existed.
If it were not for me stepping into new challenges, new learning opportunities and developing myself, I would not have become aware of some of the fantastic things that I have studied and now count on in my practice.
If I had not stepped into those opportunities, I would not have travelled to some of the fantastic places that I have been to, not have experienced the cultures and friendships that I now have around the world and would not have made the changes that I have made in my own life that have so positively impacted me and my way of being.
I am fortunate to be surrounded by like-minded people, people that inspire me to take on new challenges, to scale new heights and that opens me up to an ever increasing world of possibility.
How about you? What is your journey?
